Honorable Mention a letter to a friend alan addotto Saving what’s really worthwhile-a letter to a friend. You asked me about the “survivability” of your poetry. I had a long answer-- theological cosmological, literary, and even a pretty wise bit of pompous, clever commentary at the end. Really I did. Damm thing when at least three pages of some pretty good verse (or worse depending on your evaluation) Then at my most professorial best During my most eloquent sermon the electricity blinked off and the whole brilliant thing was lost. I had not “saved” anything. I almost shit laughing at being reminded about my own exaggerated self-evaluation. This thunderstorm is mine forever. It arrived just in time to remind me what a puffed up ass I can be. Thank you Lord, I am a stupid man but this time I believe I understand. Or An ancient Chinese poet sat writing exquisitely beautiful poetry on fallen autumn leaves with the delicate touch from pointed tip of his brush --------- just enough space to catch the Tao. Bending over he set them on the water of the Great Ya-Lu. nudging, encouraging them off into the current. Off they went Off they went Many Many Many All irretrievable little infinitely fragile dry little leaf boats afloat on and absorbing the water …………eventually sinking into it. completely, irrevocably irretrievable, gone. The poet sat there obviously non-thinking for a while then……………… a smile finally loud outrageous laughter. Yes, my minature captain, laughter!
